The Arhuaco Communications Collective

Young people using photography to preserve memories in the indigenous Arhuaco community

The Arhuaco Communications Collective

At the beginning of MEMPAZ, the new Indigenous Library and Memory House opened in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, supported by the National Library of Colombia. Based in the Library, the Arhuaco Communications Collective used new technologies including drones and digital cameras to complement traditional indigenous Arhuaco storytelling. By taking and sharing photos, the group expanded their memories, thereby protecting and sharing them in a culturally appropriate way. You can watch the films made by the Communications Collective about traditional lifestyles, and the photographs they have chosen to share which document lives, memories and communities.

Outsiders used to document our story before, now it is us. (Kwaringumu, Pueblo Bello, October 2019).
